History of the M113 in IDF service

The first M113s in the IDF were likely some that may have been captured from the Jordanians in the 1967 Six Day War. With the French stopping sales to Israel following the war, the US became Israel's main arms partner. While the M3/5 series halftrack was still mechanically reliable, it's lack of overhead protection and light armour required teh IDF to look at a more modern alternative. The M113 fit the bill, It was light, had reasonable armour against small arms and shrapnal and most of all easily adaptable for a number of roles.

Even with the best intentions the money still needs to be there. The IDF was, however, also embarked on major upgrades program for its MBT fleet following the 1967 war. It also was fighting an "undeclared" War of attrition until 1970 with both Egypt and Syria. By the Yom Kippur war of 1973 M113s were bought as were some M577 command variants, although these were used primarily by the Artillery corps. These vehicles were used pretty much stock with the Addition of side racks and rods for storage plus 2 .30 cals added for crew weapons on pintle mounts at the rear crew hatch.

Following the Yom Kippur war more M113s were ordered as well as specialty variants. some of the included variants were the TOW version, HAWK missle launcher, M548 cargo, M579 w/crane as well as mortar variants and the Chapparal AA missle system. by the early 80s The IDF employed close to 4000 M113s second only to the US in numbers. HAlftracks are still being used by some units but their days are definitely numbered.

By the Mid 80s the IDF is receiving the M113a2 as well.By the mid 1980s as well the IDF is looking for ways to give the M113 better protection from small arms and the ever present RPG. The result is the Toga armour array which is an array of armour placed away from the vehicle on brackets. While not perfect this "spaced" armour does help and extends the life of the vehicle into the twenty first century.

Between the fighting in Lebanon and the terrorist uprisings in Israel starting in 2000 new ways are needed to protect crews in the new century's type of warfare; The low intensity conflict. For this the IDF has developed a continueing series of sheilds and boxes surrounding the commanders and fighting compartment hatches. The common name given the shield version is "Kasman" while the boxes receive the name "Nagaman". There was an earlier type called "classical" that was short lived which had incoporated reactive armour as on Magach MBTs. This was removed from sevice best I've heard after an incident when some soldiers were killed by exploding reactive armour although Ican't find anything to verify this.

Israel today is in search for a replacement for its now aging fleet of M113s. A testbed on a modified Bradley chassis seems to have been a failure. the APC or rather AFV type centurions are really only a stop gap measure. the Achzarit while heavily armoured and containing a rear door is still not a long term solution. The IDF would like very much to have APCs based on the Merkava chassis. but Until funding can be gotten this is a pipe dream. The IDF today needs nearly 5000 APCs to replace its M113s. At least for the present urban combat vehicles are whats needed.and these, if reports are to be believed, will be in the form of armoured wheeled vehicles. Some M113s may be replaced sooner than others with the merkava based Namer ARV vehicles reaching active units.

What ever may replace them, the M113 has like so many vehicles used by the IDF been taken to its limit by modifications and attachments. New modifications for the vehicle are still being seen at this past Euroatory was any indication. Like many AFV types that seem to last the M113s adaptability will keep it soldiering on for quite some time especially with no affordable replacement is on the horizen.

IDF designations and types in service

A note about IDF designations. Simply they are very hard to nail down. Many common designations are just media applications. Those that do come from Israeli sources are often intentionally misleading. To this end the designations on this and the other reference pages are based on best available knowledge. If you have better information feel free to let us know.

The following table ccovers the types of M113s used by the IDF. The IDF tends to use names or a conjuction with a job description as in "Nagmash Pikud" or command M113. Nagmash being the conjunction of the term "Noseit Geysot Me'Shoryonit" or Nagmash (נגמ"ש) from the letters N(נ) G(ג) M(מ) SH (ש).

M113(a1)? Bardales / Zelda the picture depicts a standard M113 during 1973. note teh three crew served weapons. one .50 cal for the TC and 2 .30 cal for the crew on pintle mounts. of note are the missing antenna guard common to US variants. Note vehicle has standard IDF storage shelves and rod for equipment. Markings seen are standard with bridging circle and unit insignia on front right side. Notice unknown mount just forward of engine exaust. also no side skirts.
This photo of a M113 apc variant during the initial stages of the war in lebanon.very little has changed except for the crew served weapons these are now the common FN Mags. Of note are the vehicle markings with squres possibly replacing barrel stripes.
Here we have an early toga protected M113, again with standard weapons load out of commanders .50 cal browning and two crew served .30 cal Mags. This particular vehicle is part of a engineer unit based on the inverted 'W' marking towards the rear.
Kasman type one This M113 has the first generation Kasman armour shields. this consists of two foldable shields to the left and right of the crew hatch and two 'V' shaped shields to the left and right of the TC. each shield has two armoured windows. The TC's hatch protects him from fire from the rear. The top of the TC's shield is open. This vehicle also mounts two ten round smoke grenade launcher units mounted on the front corners of the Toga armour.
Kasman Type Two This version of shield armour was more of an upgrade rather than new type. a roof was placed on top of the TC's shields with added hatch. The two rear shields recieved added overhead flaps.the rear hatch can be locked in the verticle position using it's own spring locks.
Classical A relatively short lived answer to the proliferation of AT attacks in lebanon. This setup of reactive armour significantly changed the profile of the M113. this variant mounted two 6 round smoke grenade launchers
Nagman style one the increase of sniper fire during the 2000 - present terror uprising in Israel, better cover was needed for the m113s. the answer was a totaly enclosed rear 'box over the exposed hatches of the M113.
Nagman style two A second More streamlined version of the protective box started showing itself in 2004.
The front line M113 Ambulance is a standard M113 equipped to carry stretchers. at least two layout have been seen one with center crew seating and one with a pivoting seat for the medic on the right side of the vehicle. stretchers are hung from a static pole unit on the hull wall side and chains along the center. IDF ambulances are armed as are IDF medics. this vehicle sports a raise able ram.
M577 Mugaf מוגף The mugaf is the the fire control vehicle for artillery batteries. All the M109s would hook up a phone to the rear and get target information from the Mugaf.external differences are seen in the external layout. vehicle ans a single .30 cal otr MAg in a non rotating mount in front of TC hatch.
this vehicle is basically a test bed The IDF never really wanted or had the funds to develop a IFV. this gun gun which would find its way onto chilean shermans is supposedly able to penetrate a M60
Giraffe ג"ירף M113 TOW mounted on the M113 chassis. spare rounds are carried within. TOW is raised and lowered into position on rod located at front of top crew hatch. vehicle is seen with and without rear fuel cells. some variants have fold down desk on left rear side. .50 cal machine gun mount is modified to fold out of way.
M106 Laysh לייש Based on the standard M106 track these vehicle have mounted a 81mm mortar similar to the US version only with a slightly different mount and loadout. Supposedly 120mm mortars were also mounted but I can find no photo evidence. at LIC 2004 a new 120 mm variant was shown that looks like a breach mortar.
M163 Vulcan

hovet חובט

The Hovet is a straight M163, the vehicle was modified with standard side rails and storage racks. when during the Lebanon war it was used in the ground support some direct sights were added to its aiming platform. some had the two rods in front of the radar removed while others were seen with flotation panels as in the Itaeiri Kit.
M163 vulcan Machbet מחבט At some point the IDF removed the radar unit added new sites and a quad stinger launcher in place of the radar unit.a new stowage arrangement is used but the main weaopon and interior seem to have remained the same.
M48 Chapparal
M727 mobile HAWK   The M727 is essentially a SP version of the towed HAWK missle sysytem. when firing the launcehr box is raised into position at the rear and a blast shield is lowered to protect the hydraulics. there is also a static shield and hard cab to protect the crew area from back blast. Several reels of cable are genereally seen on the rear of these vehicles, which is likely used to connect the vehicle to its launch radars and command trailor.
M548/a1 alfa אלפא The m548/a1 is the standard ammunition carrier for the IDF.the most major difference between a standard unit and an IDF one is the IDF vehicle has a split rear door. the front gun ring is also modified to carry 6 cans of .30 cal ammo for the FN Mag.
M579 Fitter פטר nicknamed the "Fitter" in IDF use. This vehicle mounts a crane on the left side of the vehicle just to the rear of the drivers hatch. there is a larger opening down the center of the crew compartment ostensibly for carrying or working on a spare engine. THere was some debate about the seat layout in the IDF version, photos from verinden seemed to depict the standard centerline bench while a more recent photo shows two small benches.
  Chataf חט"פ
Modular chataf חט"פ מודולרי The modular chataf is a standard M113 equipped with a series of boxes to house tools and repair parts. Like the earlier versions above it is fitted out to serve one type of vehicle, Merkava, Magach M109 etc.
Lance מנפץ THe IDF recieved small numbers of the lance and its reloader variant. There are also photos of the towed version of the launcher. The Lance could fire either a conventional or nuclear warhead. In Nato countries the crews of the vehicles belonged to individual countries but were trailed by a us carrier with the Nuke warheads. The reloader version had a crane and space for two reloads. this vehicle has become outdated with the aquisition of the MLRS .
